Durham York Waste

The Durham York Energy Centre (DYEC) is a waste management facility that produces energy from the combustion of garbage. The DYEC safely processes 140,000 tonnes per year of residential garbage that remains after maximizing waste diversion programs – reducing, reusing, recycling and composting – in Durham and York Regions.

• The facility is 100 per cent publicly owned by Durham and York Regions.
• Only residential garbage from Durham and York is accepted.
• Processes up to 110,000 tonnes of Durham garbage and 30,000 tonnes of York garbage per year. 

Each year the DYEC:

• Diverts 140,000 tonnes of waste from landfill to energy recovery.
• Generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of 10,000 homes.
• Recovers and recycles the equivalent of 36 million aluminum cans and 3,000 cars worth of steel.
