Environmental Monitoring Plans & Reports

Ambient Air

The Ambient Air Monitoring and Reporting Plan has been prepared to satisfy Condition 11 of the EA Notice of Approval and Condition 7(4) of the Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA).

Three ambient air monitoring stations have been sited in consultation with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC). Ambient air monitoring commenced in May 2013.

Three monitoring stations have been selected to monitor ambient air near the vicinity of the Durham York Energy Centre. An upwind (background) ambient air monitoring station is located on the Courtice Water Pollution Control Plant property and a downwind ambient air monitoring station is located at Baseline and Rundle Road. Both the upwind and downwind stations monitor the following contaminants:

  • Continuous emissions monitoring (CEM): Nitrogen oxides (NOx), Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5)
  • Non continuous monitoring: Total Suspended Particulate Matter (TSP), Metals (in TSP), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Dioxins and Furans.

A third monitoring station is located on the northeast corner of the Durham York Energy Centre property and will measure fugitive emissions from the facility. This station provides non-continuous monitoring of metals in total suspended particulate matter (TSP). Ambient air monitoring results are be posted on the website.
